Mad Cat Jack Lorang

Mad Cat Jack Lorang

Jack Lorang is an artist and moved to Taos from Northern Illinois in the Chicago Suburbs. He came to Taos about ten years ago and started practicing music when he was about 14 years old. That is when he started taking guitar lessons from his sister's older friend. And after learning a few chords, Jack started to write his own songs. He was taught for about a year and started teaching himself more about music.

So What Got Jack Started in Music

Like explained earlier, Jack started taking guitar lessons when he was 14 years old. And he proceeded to start writing his music almost at the same age. Moreover, his parents liked listening to Neil Young and Bob Dylan. So, he was emulating his parent's enthusiasm for music as a start. Jack also liked the idea of writing, as it helped him work his way through different emotions.

Jack's First Performance Experience

Jack's first performance happened when he was about 16-17 years old. It took place in a coffee shop called the Big Apple Bagels. He was able to perform there with his high school friend, who was working in the shop at that time. It was a fun experience for Jack because many friends showed up at the event and performed alongside other musicians.

The Training Process of Jack's Musical Journey

Different guitar players have taught Jack to play the instrument over a short period. He's also had little formal training with the instrument and manages to gain some significant wisdom in playing the guitar.

Why Jack Lorang Values Music

To Jack, music and songwriting has helped him to sort through his perception of the world. He also incorporates poetry as his way of understanding the world. Jack has been unfortunate to lose some close people in his life, and writing songs for them helped him get through the process.

His Recent Projects

Jack recorded several songs back at his house in El Salto this past summer. He's also done about 20 song recordings and has been listening to his work more often. Jack has released songs online and worked with a friend to record new music that is not yet released. Jack has written many songs and would enjoy even more time to work on his creations.

COVID's Impact on Jack's Work

Before COVID, Jack was used to having many shows lined up, especially during summer. But, the pandemic has limited him to performing about 2-3 gigs only. He's done a few YouTube videos, and Jack plans to push his craft online more during the winter. That's because he usually writes and records plenty during winter and merging releases. Songwriting is what he loves doing.

Jack's Goals for the Rest of 2020

Jack wants to put out more recordings and do more live streams for the remaining part of the year. He would also like to connect and perform with other musicians since he hasn't been doing that very often. Finally, Jack is looking forward to a safe but close experience with friends and family during the holidays.
